High Level Description
Advancements in computer vision and cloud computing have led to innovative ways to make day-to-day life more accessible for everyone. One such opportunity is recognizing and translating sign language to facilitate communication between hearing-impaired individuals and those who can’t understand sign language.
This project aims to create a system that can recognize sign language signals using camera input, process the data on AWS Cloud, and send the translated text back to the user. This approach leverages the scalability and power of cloud computing to deliver accurate, real-time translation without the limitations of resource-constrained devices.
Project Description
This project focuses on the development of a camera-based sign language recognition system with cloud processing. Key objectives include:
- Gesture Recognition: Develop, train, and deploy a machine vision algorithm on AWS Cloud to detect and classify sign language gestures with high accuracy.
- Input and Output: Implement a method for capturing gestures from camera files and sending the translated result as text back to the user’s device.
- System Design and Integration: Design a setup where input is received and processed in the AWS Cloud, and returned as text output.
- Testing and Validation: Test the system in real-world or simulated scenarios to assess recognition accuracy, latency, usability, and robustness in various conditions.
- Iteration and Improvement: Continuously refine the cloud-based software and system architecture to improve recognition performance, accuracy, and user experience.
Who are we looking for?
We are seeking a master's student with a background in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, Embedded Systems, or related fields to join our project. While prior experience with machine learning, sensor integration, and AWS services is beneficial, it is not required. The ideal candidate should have:
- An interest in assistive technologies and real-time signal processing.
- Motivation to work hands-on on cloud deployment and algorithm development.
- Eagerness to contribute to research that promotes inclusivity and accessibility through technology.
Purpose
The primary purpose of this thesis is to develop a working computer vision algorithm capable of recognizing sign language and translating it in real time using cloud computing. By deploying this algorithm on AWS Cloud and integrating it with a camera-based input system, the translation can be processed remotely and the resulting text sent back to the user’s device. This approach aims to enable seamless communication and empower individuals with hearing impairments. The technology could lead to more inclusive environments and lay the groundwork for future innovations in assistive systems.
