Driving change across industries at Hardware & Design
Meet Erik Sundfeldt, a Knightec Group consultant whose work spans industries and technologies, from designing cutting-edge marine structures to advancing medical device engineering.
What do you do at Knightec Group?
I've had the opportunity to carry out several different assignments at Knightec Group, always with innovation and engineering as core pillars. Knightec Group has a broad client base, and curiosity about different technologies and industries is encouraged. That curiosity has taken me from designing sheet metal and composite structures for 40-meter-high marine wing sails to innovative plastic design with industry leaders in pre-filled syringes. And plenty of fun projects in between. I've done some assignments at clients' sites, but in recent years, I have gradually transitioned to fully working from Knightec Group innovation hub.
What is the Knightec Group Innovation Hub?
"It is an umbrella concept we developed to create a forum for assignments that don't fit within the more traditional on-site consultant role. At Knightec Group, over 60% of our deliveries fall into this category."
He continues, within the Innovation Hub, we can take on full project deliveries, managing the entire development process from start to finish. We also frequently support clients by stepping in with specific expertise to enhance their ongoing projects. Typically, I dedicate about 60–70% of my time to one main assignment while staying flexible to contribute to other ongoing projects. This adaptability enhances the quality of our work and keeps things dynamic for me, bringing fresh insights into various projects. Ultimately, this leads to stronger, more impactful deliveries for our clients.
Working within the Innovation Hub has also introduced Erik to the business side of consulting. "I'm responsible for scoping out projects and their budgets to ensure we're doing the right things for the clients while making it profitable. As a strategic service provider, the earlier we can enter the client's dialogue and decision-making, the better positioned we are to create the positive change we always aim for. This journey has given me a broader outlook and a more comprehensive approach to my role as a product developer."
What sets our way of working apart?
We make a significant effort to embody the idea of a cross-functional organization. All necessary competencies for a project, whether industrial designers, structural engineers, or developers, are involved from the start. We're encouraged to challenge each other's perspectives, which, in my experience, is one of the biggest drivers of innovation, Erik explains:
"My background is in mechanical engineering and industrial design, and my employer values design thinking as a tool for driving both development and business. Knightec Group understands that all development must challenge itself and push boundaries, always focusing on the end user."'
